A Cry for Help (Psalm 143)

We have all heard about God as our Creator, God as our Lord, and God as our King.  We have heard the lines claiming Him to be our Father, our Counselor, and our Friend but struggled to understand what that means.

Our God is not only fearfully Powerful, He is also our Refuge and our Guide.

Have you gone through troubles and had to find Him for Strength and Comfort?  Have you ever had to turn to Him for Rescue from a difficult and dark season in your life?  Have you needed HOPE in a time where all eyes were on you feeling hopeless?

There are times you will read the Bible because you feel told to, and times where you will turn to it needing comfort for your broken spirit.

As I sit in Psalm 143 today, I feel as though I am sitting with David pouring out his heart with the ink in his hand.  He cries to God for help, and he does it in a way that reminds me the plea we make to God when we turn to Him in our most desperate of needs.

David speaks in Psalm 143: 7-10 (HCSB):

Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails.  Don’t hide your face from me, or I will be like those going down to the Pit.  Let me experience your faithful love in the morning for I trust in You.  Reveal to me the way I should go because I long for You.  Rescue me from my enemies, Lord; I come to You for protection.  Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.  May Your gracious Spirit lead me on level ground.”

David’s heart is crying out for the aid of His Father.  His words long for the connection to be guided by the true King that He puts His trust in.

Maybe you are reading David’s words today just inspired by them, or maybe you are reading them like me remembering the time you cried out these words to God with tears flowing from your eyes, or maybe today that is you and your heart is heavy pleading this cry for God to enter in to your life today and show up in a way only He can.

Whatever brings you to these words, the inspiration and direction I see from David’s heart shows us the bold desire we need to have as we cry out to God for help:

  • ANSWER ME
  • LET ME EXPERIENCE YOUR FAITHFUL LOVE
  • REVEAL TO ME
  • RESCUE ME
  • TEACH ME
  • LEAD ME

What are you going through today?  Can you look at your situation, see within your heart for even just a moment and ask the God that is your Refuge from the storm and your Counselor in muddy waters to enter in to your situation in these 6 specific ways.  Write them out, cry them out, take some time to just sit with them.  What do you need to cry out to God for help with today?  What are you asking Him to “answer [you] quickly” in?  He is there!
